Ruth W. Ackerman, Ph.D., L.C.S.W.

 

Ruth W. Ackerman, Ph.D., L.C.S.W. received her M.S.W. from the University of California, Berkeley  in 1967, a Master’s Degree in Organizational Development in 1991 and a Ph.D. in Human and Organizational Development from The Fielding Institute, Santa Barbara, CA in 1994.  


Dr. Ackerman has been in private practice since 1974. Her theoretical orientation is eclectic and includes individual, family, couples and adolescent treatment. She is an adjunct faculty member at Antioch University, and Pacific Graduate Institute where she has taught family therapy and couple’s counseling. Currently a Research Associate at the Fielding Graduate University, Dr. Ackerman pursues research on alternative treatments for ADHD.  She is a Registered Trainer for the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association. She consults nationally and internationally.


Her specific background in child and adolescent treatment includes field placement on the inpatient children's unit at Langley- Porter Neuropsychiatric Hospital in San Francisco, and four years working in child protective services in San Francisco and Anchorage, Alaska. She has been trained as a behavioral intervention specialist. She worked for the state of California during the deinstitutionalization process in the 1970’s, providing placement and resource development services for developmentally delayed children and teens. She served for many years as president of the board of  CALM, the non profit agency providing services to abused and neglected children. Dr. Ackerman was initially trained in family therapy at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Center under Salvador Minuchin..  She currently is a  consultant to the Daniel Bryant Youth Center, a non profit program for chemically dependent youth.  She has been supervisor and consultant for counseling services to Casa Serena and Casa Rosa, two clean and sober living programs for women and their young children. 


Dr. Ackerman has been affiliated with the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association since 1986. In  1988 she founded the acupuncture based chemical dependency treatment program, Project Recovery, in Santa Barbara, CA. She served as a consultant to various Drug Court Diversion Programs nationally and internationally. Her research has focused on acupuncture treatment for chemically dependent pregnant women and she has been instrumental in establishing many such programs.
